Canyon Call — User Guide

Canyon Call is the neighborhood app for Sunset Canyon. It keeps you connected to community news, member discussions, and your dues payment history — all in one place.

The Main Screen

Canyon Call main screen

The main screen is your home base. From here you can jump into Newsletters, Announcements, Discussions, Groups, and I Need Help / I Can Help. A red badge on a button means there's new activity you haven't seen yet — it clears once you open that section.

Tap More in the top-right corner of any screen to reach Settings and the rest of the app's options.

Newsletters

The Newsletters section gives you quick access to the latest Canyon Call newsletter in PDF format. Tap the button to load and read the current issue directly in the app. Past issues can also be accessed.

Announcements

Announcements are posted by the SCLA board to keep everyone informed.

A red badge on the Announcements button means there are posts you haven't seen yet. Once you open and read them, the badge clears automatically.

Discussions

Discussions are a members-only space to ask questions, share information, and start conversations with your neighbors on topics of interest to our neighborhood. CanyonCall is about being informed, and helpful to each other, rather than being social.

Starting a Discussion

Tap the + button to create a new discussion. When you create a new discusssion, you'll be asked whether you want to be notified when others reply — you can toggle this on or off at any time after posting.

Replying

Open any discussion to read the thread and add a reply. You have the option of including a photo along with your reply. You can like individual posts and replies to show agreement or appreciation without needing to write a response.

Notification Options

If you are the owner of a discussion topic, you will see a gear icon in the top right when viewing the details of the discussion. From there you can:

Favorites

Tap the star icon on any discussion to add it to your favorites. Use the filter toggle at the top of the Discussions list to show only your favorited discussions, making it easy to track threads you care about.

Unseen Badges

A red badge on the Discussions button on the home screen means there are discussions with new activity you haven't seen. Within the list, individual discussions are highlighted when they have new replies since your last visit. Badges clear once you open the thread.

Push Notifications

If you've enabled reply notifications for a discussion, Canyon Call will send you a push notification when a new reply is posted. Tapping the notification takes you directly to that discussion.

Push notifications require notification permissions to be granted to the app. You'll be prompted when you first launch the app.

Groups

Groups are a way to organize around a common goal. It could be play groups, book clubs, car-pools, block parties. Like discussions, it's not intended to be social or to discuss topics, that's what NextDoor and Facebook are for. You can suggest a group to start, and it must be approved by an admin. There can be multiple organizers of a group with advanced roles like the ability to approve members. All members must initiate a request to join.

Any group member can post and anyone can leave a comment on a post. Images can be attached to a post or to a comment. You can delete your own comment by long-touching the comment.

Directory

The Directory lists every member of the community, so you can see who's part of Canyon Call and search for a neighbor by name.

Each member's entry also shows their rank — a badge that reflects how active they've been in the community. Ranks are earned automatically as you participate: creating and replying to discussions, creating or joining groups, posting and commenting in groups, submitting feedback, flagging inappropriate content, and setting a profile photo all contribute.

There are six ranks, from newest member to most active:

  1. Trailhead — where every member starts.
  2. Switchback
  3. Ridgeline
  4. Summit
  5. Peak Bagger
  6. Canyon Legend — reserved for the community's most active members.

There's nothing to configure — your rank rises automatically the more you use the app.

I Need Help / I Can Help

This section allows you to post requests for help. It can be a request for some service, or request to borrow an item. You can also post an Offer for to help. Describe services you are willing to help someone with or items you are willing to lend. If you offer help a message is sent to the poster and you can optionally include contact info.

These are not for hire or pay transactions. More of a bartering system. You help someone out and down the line you might receive help.

There are filters to control type of items being shown.
